Scene: A normal house. Two of the goblin-like creatures that the party knows as the cannon fodder of Magus's army sit at a table. With a series of weird noises, a bureau opens, revealing a Gate, from which Crono and the others emerge. The goblins are understandably surprised. Silent Light plays.

The goblins seem more shocked than angry in the JP version.

The party starts to leave before things go downhill. One of the goblins stops them.

Marle: Thanks for telling us!
But....
Why are you being kind to us?
Demons hate humans, right?

Lucca: Thanks for the advice!
But, Demons are supposed to
hate humans, right?
Why are you...?

Robo: THANK you for the suggestion.
HOWEVER, WHY are you so
graciously BEING kind to us?
Do NOT the Demons HATE humans?

Crono and friends leave the house. Something seems to be happening in the middle of town.... Demons are assembled around a statue, and a strange chanting is heard.

Marle: Hey, Crono.
I wonder what those eerie voices are?

Marle: Crono, what's that weird
chanting?

Lucca: ...eerie voices.
I wonder what's being done here?

Lucca: That chanting's pretty
creepy!
What do you make of it?

Robo: Wh, what ON EARTH could
THESE eerie voices BE?

Robo: From where does this eerie
chanting originate?

Crono and the others listen to what the Demons have to say when not busy chanting...

In the rest of the town, the Demons are generally hostile, but the goblins, who seem to be bullied around by the tougher Demons, are fairly friendly. This is most obvious in the chief's house. The chief himself is basically a big blue ball of lard with a tail, who sits around doing nothing....

...while goblins perform menial tasks and wish they didn't have to.

There's some kind of blue pyramid north of town that seems to be made of a forcefield, but the party can't do anything there at this point. They head west....

It's a fairly normal house. Swords hang on the wall. The old man who stands inside was at the festival earlier.

Bosch: Oh, come to visit, have you!
I hope you view my collection before
you leave, I'm quite proud of it.
Ah, you've come to buy the weapons I've
made, haven't you? I'll make it cheap.

MELCHIOR: Ah, hello!
Could I interest you in a weapon?

Bosch: Weapons, you see....
They aren't for taking life.
They ought to be to foster life.

MELCHIOR: Weapons...
If there weren't evil in this world,
there would be no need for
weapons.
What a sad state of affairs...

I don't think I need to point out how badly the above lines got mangled...

Bosch: Ah, yes, all of you.
If you want to return to the town of Truce,
you should pass through the cave in the
mountain north of this house.

MELCHIOR: Should you desire to return
to Truce village, use the shortcut
through the cave in the mountains to
the north.

It's a dank cave. There's no music, just the sound of rushing water. Two Demon thugs stand guard inside.

They're not too tough, but physical attacks don't work well, like the one goblin in town said. Enemies throughout the cave are similarly resistant to physical attacks, but easily dispatched with magic. Good thing the party just learned to use magic... and if you run low on MP, just leave and head through the Gate for the free recovery, because the monsters never come back once beaten.

Now that magic is thrown into the mix, cooperative techniques start getting more interesting. As the characters learn more individual techniques, a total of eight each, they learn more combined techniques, eventually totalling three for each pair (with the exception of one optional character). Additionally, every group of three that includes Crono (and excludes the optional character just mentioned) can learn a three-person technique, but most of those require high-end techniques and won't be available for a while.

Deep into the cave, a beast with a spikey back, big teeth, and huge claws approaches.

Of course, it's another boss battle. Like the normal enemies, but moreso, magical attacks are the only way to cause significant damage to Hekeran, the creature that just attacked. The beast doesn't hurt much most of the time, but sometimes goes into a counterattacking stance, which is a good time to heal.

And then it finally dies. But the party is unsettled.

Lucca: So the Magus of the Middle
Ages really did give birth to the Lavos
that wrecked this planet's future....

Lucca: In the Middle Ages, Magus
created Lavos, the destroyer of this
planet's future!

Marle: So the one who gave birth to the
Lavos that wrecked this planet's future
was the Magus of the Middle Ages....

Marle: In the Middle Ages, Magus
created Lavos, who is responsible for
destroying this planet's future.

Marle: I wonder if history will change if we
go to the Middle Ages and beat Magus?

Marle: If we go to the Middle Ages
and take out Magus, can we
change history?

Robo: IF we CAN defeat Magus in the
Middle Ages, MIGHT history change?

Robo: If we go to the Middle Ages
and destroy Magus, can we
change history?

Lucca: If we use the Gate in the Millenial
Festival square....

Lucca: We could use the Gate at the
Fairgrounds!

Marle: Hey, Crono. If we use the Gate
in the Millenial Festival square....

Marle: Hey, Crono, we could use
the Gate at the Fairgrounds!

There's a whirlpool at the end of the cave. The party jumps in, and after a brief trip... they land in the outskirts of Truce Village, near Lucca's house. The near end of the whirlpool remains, and they can jump back in and return to the cave at any time, though there's little point to it for now. As long as they're in the area, might as well visit around....

Books and machinery are strewn everywhere. Lucca's mother sits upstairs.

Lara: Lucca and Taban are both
busy with inventions.

LARA: Lucca and Taban only care
about their silly toys!

Taban enters and walks up to her.

Taban: Look, I got these apples
with today's earnings.

Taban heads back downstairs.

Taban: The great Taban's great invention.
The perfect armor for Lucca!
Use it well!

TABAN: It's my finest work!
The ultimate in defense for my,
daughter!

Gina is sitting in a chair, instead of being up and busy as usual. She stands up, surprised, as the party walks in.

Gina: Crono!!
Crono! Crono!!
What a relief....
I heard you were going
to be executed....
Don't make your mother
worry any more.

While they're there, time for more meetings. Let's start with Lucca.

おばさん (oba-san) means "aunt", but is also used to address middle-aged women, though some prefer younger-sounding terms.

Gina: Ah, Lucca.
You haven't come by much lately, have you?

MOM: Lucca!
We hardly see you these days!

Gina: Yes, well, make sure you don't push
yourself too hard and damage your health.
Give my best regards to Lara and Taban
too, please.

Robo's turn.

MOM: Goodness...!
Lucca, is THIS one of your
inventions?

Robo: It is nice to MEET you.
I AM called Robo.
I HAVE recieved considerable
assistance from Crono.

Robo: Greetings.
I am Robo.
Crono is my friend.

Gina: My, my, so courteous.
Even though you look a bit
peculiar, you're very polite.
Crono, follow his example a little.

MOM: My, how poilte!
Strange looking, but well behaved!
Crono, you could learn a thing or
two.

A small shop in Truce Village. Fritz (the guy Crono rescued from the dungeon earlier) and a girl about the same age are here.

He suddenly realizes who it is. The girl comes over to the counter as he talks.

Fritz: Crono-san!!!
Seriously, thank you for back then.
Thanks to you, I was able to come
back home.
I'm beat....
I was thinking I'd outdo my old man,
and going on a trip to stock up was
all well and good....
But I got mixed up in the arrest of a gang
of robbers at an inn on the way back.
I got arrested along with them.
And the death penalty even, without
even hearing me out! Why in the... phew...
You really saved me.

FRITZ: Crono!!
I owe you one!
You saved my skin back there.
Man, was I up the creek!
I went off on a buying trip, and
ended up getting jailed with a bunch
of thieves!
The officials planned to execute me
without a trial!
What has gotten into them?

Elaine: Thank you so very much.
I'm so fortunate right now.

ELAINE: We're forever in your debt!
Thank you, again!

Someone walks out of the back room. Fritz is startled.

Fritz's dad leaves.

Fritz: Well, Crono-san.
It's business from here on, go
on and buy what I stocked up.

FRITZ: Now Crono, down to
business.
Please, buy whatever you like!

After buying anything needed, it's time to head off through time again...
