Previous Chapter: I'm Home!

Kingdom Trial The Trial
A.D.1000 Guardia Castle Courtroom

The courtroom is artfully constructed, but very imposing. (Kingdom Trial), a solemn and not at all reassuring track, plays.

This scene has an enourmous number of variations that depend both on what Crono did and didn't do at the fair earlier and on how he responds to questioning. I consider this to be a great scene, incidentally, since all those little, apparently meaningless things you did or didn't do back at the beginning of the game come back and really matter. For once, they actually care how you responded to seemingly pointless options!

I'm the the public prosecutor, the chancellor! I'm the Chancellor, the prosecutor!
I am the lawyer Pierre. I'm the lawyer, Pierre.

Chancellor: Welcome, everyone.
Let us bring in the man called Crono,
who is suspected in the crime of
kidnapping Princess Marledia.

CHANCELLOR: Members of the court.
We now bring forth the defendant,
Crono, who is charged with
abducting Princess Nadia.

The chancellor walks to the doorway and leads Crono to the center of the room.

Chancellor: What to do with this man....
Burning at the stake? The tickling sentence?
Hanging upside-down?
Or.... a guillotine to his neck....
It will be all of you who decide that.
Now, let us begin.

CHANCELLOR: What shall we do with
him?
Fire, pehaps?
Hang him upside down for a few
years?
Or...shall we employ the guillotine?
You, the jury, shall decide
his fate.
Now, let us begin.

The tickling sentence...?

Presiding Judge: Now, defendant Crono!
Take the witness stand.

JUDGE: Crono, you are hereby
ordered to tell the truth!

Pierre: I will begin.
Did Crono truly have any intent to
kidnap? ...no, he did not.
The prosecution says the defendant
premeditatedly kidnapped the princess,
but is that the case? ...no, it is not.
The two met by chance, and it was
by no means intentional.

PIERRE: Crono is charged with
 "Premediated Abduction of Royalty."
The question is, did he kidnap
 Princess Nadia? The answer?
 No, he did not.
In fact, no "abduction" took place!
 The two met completely by
accident. In fact, the Princess ASKED
Crono if SHE could join HIM!

Chancellor: Is that really so?
Which of you made the first move?

CHANCELLOR: Is this true? Who actually
started this whole mess?

The player is given a choice here. It was Crono who ran into her, though it was a chance meeting regardless. Unless you believe in fate....

Marle did. Marle did.

(this alternate from text dumps, actual usage of text is unconfirmed).

Chancellor: Can you really swear to that?
There are witnesses who say it
was you who collided with her.

CHANCELLOR: Are you sure?
We have witnesses who'll say YOU
were the one that bumped into the
princess.

I did. I did.

Chancellor: Very well!
As you heard, the defendant approached
the princess under the guise of chance.

CHANCELLOR: Just as I suspected!
The defendant deliberately tried to
get near the Princess!

Chancellor: Then, having invited the princess, he made
tracks to Lucca and her father's show.
Many people bore witness to that.
And then, the two disappeared....
If this isn't kidnapping, then what on
earth is it?
I have even gotten hold of several
facts that place the defenant's
humanity in question.

CHANCELLOR: The Princess then
innocently followed you to
Lucca's little sideshow.
Whereupon you both disappeared!
If that wasn't criminal abduction, I
don't know WHAT is!
And I have facts that
throw the defendant's character into
question!

人間性 (ningensei) refers to humanity as in being humane, not as in being a human being.

Pierre: Objection!
Does that have any relevance to
the current case? ...no, it does not.

PIERRE: Objection!
 This can't have any relevance
 whatsoever to this case!
Presiding Judge: Is there relevance? Chancellor. JUDGE: Care to respond, Chancellor?

Chancellor: Yes. There is a need to make
known the defendant's humanity in order
to show his testimony's accuracy.

CHANCELLOR: Crono's character is at
the very core of this case!

If Crono helped the little girl at the festival find her cat....

Pierre: Very well. PIERRE: We have nothing to hide.

The above line may appear regardless, I'm not sure.

Pierre: Then we shall bring in a witness.
A charming witness who will
verify the defendant's honesty.

PIERRE: We have a witness.
A little girl who will vouch for the
character of the defendant.

The little girl walks into the courtroom.

This person....
He brought me my kitty.
Thanks for what you did then.
This nice man...
He brought me my kitty.
Thank you for being so kind!

The girl leaves, and the arguments resume.

Pierre: How about that?
This young person's conduct?
It's worthy of a medal.

PIERRE: How about that?
Doesn't this young man deserve a
medal?

Pierre walks over to Crono and speaks in an aside.

Pierre: Heh, heh....
Looks like it's working.

PIERRE: Whew...
Looks like they're buying it.

However, if Crono was less helpful (I think you need to talk to the girl, but not retrieve the cat)....

(this alternate from text dumps, actual usage of text is unconfirmed).

Chancellor: The defendant's heartless
personality is obvious.

CHANCELLOR: The defendant's cruelty is
quite evident.

Chancellor: I suppose you recall this?
You wouldn't even listen to the request of a
helpless girl who had lost sight of her cat.

CHANCELLOR: You remember HER, don't
you?
The poor little girl who lost her cat?
You wouldn't even listen to her!

The little girl walks into the courtroom.

You ignored me. You ignored me!

Chancellor: Oh... how pitiable....
Thank you.

CHANCELLOR: Oh you poor dear!
Thank you.

Chancellor: No further explanation is required.

CHANCELLOR: As you can see, no further
proof is necessary here.

But it can still get worse. Hope you didn't eat the old man's lunch, you big jerk.

(this alternate from text dumps, actual usage of text is unconfirmed).

Chancellor: Have you ever committed theft?

CHANCELLOR: Have you ever stolen
anything?

"I have." / "Well...yes." :

Chancellor: See, as he says.
The defendant is lacking in morals.
He even admits it himself.
Please listen. It's a cry for help!

CHANCELLOR: See!
He lacks morals!
This should be on the record!
He's crying out for help!

"I certainly have not." / "No! I've never been a thief." :

Chancellor: Don't play dumb.
We have a witness.

CHANCELLOR: DO NOT feign ignorance!
We have a witness.

The old man walks in.

My precious lunch!
He ate it.
The lunch mommy worked
so hard to make me!
Him!
He ate my lunch right off the table!

Chancellor: There is no room for sympathy
for a defendant who would even deprive an
honestly living man of his faint pleasures.

CHANCELLOR: Let the record show that
he stole from a poor, helpless man!

Pierre: The problem is motive.
Where is the motive for this
citizen to kidnap Princess
Marledia? ....no, there is none.

PIERRE: The issue here is MOTIVE.
Was there any motive for this fine
young citizen to kidnap Princess Nadia?
No! There was none.

Chancellor: Sorry to contradict you,
but what if I say your purpose
is her wealth, Crono-kun?
You had your sights on the
princess's wealth, didn't you?

CHANCELLOR: What about ransom?
 Crono, her fortune DID tempt
 you, did it not?

What, they don't even mention the obvious reason for a healthy young man to run off with an attractive young woman?

There's another choice here.

These responses will thwart the chancellor's accusation as long as Crono behaved accordingly at the festival.

いいえ No No

Chancellor: Do you truly have
no interest in her wealth?

CHANCELLOR: Are you sure?
You really weren't tempted?

No interest Not at all.

Chancellor: W, well, all right.
No further questions.

CHANCELLOR: That's enough.
I have no more questions.

Answering either question the other way leads here:

(this alternate from text dumps, actual usage of text is unconfirmed).

はい Yes Yes
Just a little Just a bit.

Chancellor: It seems he's openly admitted it.

CHANCELLOR: So, you admit it!

Denying interest after acting suspiciously at the festival leads to some or all of the following:

(this alternate from text dumps, actual usage of text is unconfirmed).

Chancellor: Everyone, please keep
his words just now firmly in mind.
The defendant said he has no
interest in her wealth.
Now for the witness.

CHANCELLOR: Please keep in mind that
he just said he had NO interest in her
fortune.
Witness please!

A woman enters.

Uh-huhn, I saw it. He can't fool me, I saw him with my
own eyes!
When this person ran into the Princess and they
fell over, he went straight to grab up her pendant.
Before even worrying about the Princess....
That man grabbed the pendant even
before he checked to see if the
Princess was okay!
It looked like he was refusing to give the
Princess back her pendant....
He didn't seem to want to return it,
either.

A different witness (I think).

He was trying to sell it off to some
peddler named Bosch.
He tried to sell it to the merchant,
Melchior.

But wait, there's still room to make things worse. Remember when Marle stopped to buy candy? Don't rush her.

(this alternate from text dumps, actual usage of text is unconfirmed).

Chancellor: Finally, let us bring this to a
finish with some conclusive testimony.

CHANCELLOR: And this person's final bit
of testimony will prove our case!

I heard it!!
What the Princess said, plain
as day, with my own ears!
I heard it clearly.
I heard her cry out with my own ears!

Recall that rushing Marle causes her to complain about him yanking on her arm like some kidnapper. Rather damning words here.

The arguments finally come to a conclusion.

Either the chancellor or Pierre speaks. I think which one goes is determined by whether Crono is going to be found innocent or guilty.

Pierre: As you can see, this young
man has a strong sense of justice.
Now, your honor. The verdict.

PIERRE: It is evident that my client is a
fine, noble young man!
Your honor, the defense rests.

Chancellor: I have nothing more to say.
Your honor. The verdict.

CHANCELLOR: Nothing more your honor.
The prosecution rests.

You'd think Pierre would call the princess as a witness, or at least bring up the fact that Crono brought her back to the castle. After all, why would a kidnapper do something like that?

Presiding Judge: Jurors.
Go, those who think he is guilty to the left,
those who think he is not guilty to the right!

JUDGE: Members of the jury...
If he is guilty, stand to the left.
If innocent, stand to the right.

One after another, seven jurors walk into the room. Their opinions depend on how the trial went. Each of them may independently decide either guilty or innocent. The crowd cheers for each guilty vote, and boos at each not guilty. The judge pounds his gavel and yells above the noise.

Order in the court! Order in the court!
A verdict has been reached! A verdict has been reached!
Unanimously!! We have a majority!

The above line (probably) appears if applicable, but not otherwise. Note also that a majority and unanimous are quite different.

If Crono was found guilty.

(this alternate from text dumps, actual usage of text is unconfirmed).

We find him guilty.
Take him to solitary confinement at once.
In three days, we will enforce the death sentence!
The verdict is...guilty!
The sentence? Solitary confinement,
pending execution in 3 days!

If Crono was found innocent.

We find him not guilty!! The verdict is...not guilty!
...however. Though he had no intent to
kidnap, the fact is that he took Princess
Marledia away with him for a while.
We thus sentence him to three days of
solitary confinement to reflect on his actions!!
But the fact remains that even if he
did not kidnap her, he ran off with her.
3 days solitary confinement as
punishment.
Chancellor: Now, take him away! CHANCELLOR: Take him away!

Two soldiers enter to escort Crono to confinement, but Marle rushes in before they can do anything.

Marle: Wait!! Marle: Now just a darn minute...
Chancellor: P, Princess.... CHANCELLOR: Princess!

The king strides in after Marle.

King Guardia: Behave yourself!
Marledia!

KING: That's enough, my dear!
Marle: Father! Please listen! Marle: But Father...!

King Guardia: I simply want you to
remain in the castle and conduct
yourself like a proper princess.
Even the king or princess must
abide by the country's rules....
Leave the rest to the chancellor.
Marledia, forget about what
happened in the town.
Now, we're going!

KING: All I asked was for you to
behave like a princess.
Even royalty must obey rules.
Leave the rest up to the Chancellor
and forget about the events in town.
We're leaving!

By the way, remember that line about how even a king or princess must abide by the country's rules during the Rainbow-Color Shell sidequest....

The whole time the king is talking to her, Marle is shaking her head, not listening. When he finishes, he leaves, and the soldiers remove Crono. (Concealed Truth), plays. Marle runs halfway to the door, then drops to her knees.

Marle: CRONO!! Marle: Crono!!!

 A.D.1000 Guardia Castle Dungeon

The chancellor and a soldier escort Crono into what looks like the warden's room.

Chancellor: This guy's the terrorist who
plotted to overthrow the royal family.
As he was found guilty in trial, we
have come to hand him over.

CHANCELLOR: This terrorist has tried to
overthrow our kingdom!
He has been found guilty,
and you must now carry out his
sentence.

Also remember that line about trying to overthrow the royal family during the Rainbow-Color Shell sidequest.

Warden: So this guy's the terrorist
who kidnapped the Princess.

SUPERVISOR: So THIS is the monster who
kidnapped the princess!

Chancellor: His execution's in three days.
Keep watch so you won't let him escape.

CHANCELLOR: The execution is 3 days
away.
Do NOT let him out of your sight!

If Crono was found guilty....

Warden: Acknowledged. SUPERVISOR: Yes Sir!

If Crono was found innocent....

Warden: Execution? I've heard nothing
about any such thing....

SUPERVISOR: Execution?!
Strange, but I don't seem to recall
hearing anything abot an execution.

Chancellor: Never mind that.
It's just that the paperwork's delayed.
Or can't you take me at my word?

CHANCELLOR: WHAT!!
How DARE you question ME!
The paperwork's probably just been
held up in the system!

Warden: Th, that is surely not the case! SUPERVISOR: Understood, sir!
Warden: Guards! SUPERVISOR: Guards!
Warden: Take him away! SUPERVISOR: Take the prisioner away!

Two guards, clad in platemail from head to toe, walk in. Crono turns to go with them, but one knocks him out with a sword anyway. The music stops. Crono wakes up in a small, dark, dank cell. The only sound is the continuous dripping of water. Two guards stand guard, even though the only way out is a heavy gate that can only be opened with a switch outside the cell.

If Crono was found innocent, a small package lies on the dirty bed. Crono investigates the package, and a guard yells in at him.

That's a present trial attendees
who pitied you brought when it
was decided you'd go to prison.
Some sympathizers brought that stuff
for you, you lousy felon.

So Crono has some support, but that won't help if he's executed. The package is a couple of Ethers, incidentally, with the exact number depending on how well the trial went. I've gotten as many as six.

Regardless, priority one is to avoid being executed.

Escape Option 1: Repeatedly rattle the bars to annoy the guards....

Shut up! Pipe down!
Shut up! Pipe down!
Didn't you hear me saying shut up?!
I'll make you shut it, bastard.
Hey, open the door!
Knock it off!
Ooh!
I'll show him.
Open it up!

The second guard opens the door, while the first goes in to smack Crono across the cell.

Heh, you're making a fuss all the
time, so now you pay for it.
That's what you get for misbehaving.

But this time, Crono is expecting a hit, and only pretends to be passed out. Even better, his captors never bothered to disarm him. So, when the guard turns to leave, Crono takes his own sword and knocks the guard out, then heads out the door. The other guard isn't too thrilled to see him, but he's too stupid to call for help, and Crono easily overpowers him in a fair fight. From this point, Crono is free to explore the dungeon.

Escape Option 2: Wait three days (about a minute of real time) until a soldier takes Crono to be executed....

We're taking you the execution site.
Come along, now.
We're here to take you to your place
of execution.
Come along.

The soldier and guards escort Crono to what looks like a torture chamber.

We'll carry out the guillotine sentence.
Any last words?
We've sharpened up the guillotine...
Any last words?

Lucca runs in, just in time.

How is it that she never seems to have any trouble getting into the castle, regardless of the era?

Critical Moment plays.

Lucca: Crono!
I came to help!

Lucca: Crono!
I've come to save you!

Who the hell are you! Who the heck are YOU?

Lucca: You're in my way!
Sleep for a while!

Lucca: Get outta the way!!
Take 5 you mugs!

She pulls out some kind of gun and shoots everyone except Crono. They fall unmoving to the ground.

Lucca: Well? How's your taste
of the great Lucca's pride, the
Disposable Burst Blast Pistol?
Come on, let's get out of here,
quick!

Lucca: So, what do you think of my
 Zonker-38?
 Pretty cool, huh?
 Let's blow this joint!

From this point, Crono and Lucca are free to explore the dungeon.

Regardless of how Crono gets free, he finds brutish guards scattered through the dungeon.

Crono can sneak up on and knock out some guards. Most have Middle Potions on them....

There is one other significant event in here... a boy trapped in the torture chamber.

H, help me! H, Help me!

Since this is the only other normal (and living) human Crono has found, he helps the poor guy out.

Thanks, I'm saved.
My name's Fritz.
My dad manages a goods
store in Truce. Be sure to
stop by if you're in the area.
You're a life saver!
I'm Fritz.
My dad runs a store in Truce village.
Stop by if you're in the area.

Eventually, Crono reaches the warden's room, which is the only exit from the area.

If Crono broke out without Lucca's help....

Director: H, hiee! Help meee!! SUPERVISOR: H...Help!!!

He runs up the stairs, but there are sounds of a fight, and he falls back down, unconscious. Critical Moment begins playing. Lucca runs in from the stairs, which pretty much explains what happened.

Lucca: Crono!
I came to help!
...but anyhow, I see you were
able to escape by yourself.
...that's kinda boring.
Come on, let's get out of here,
quick!

Lucca: Crono!
I've come to save you!
Gee, it looks like you didn't
need my help, after all!
Let's blow this joint!

If Lucca broke Crono out, the warden is already unconcious, and Lucca's obviously already with Crono.

Regardless, there's an important-looking document on the floor. Crono reads it.

Crono and Lucca leave the dungeon and begin to cross the bridge that connects to the main castle. When they're about halfway across, they head a loud clanking rumbling noise, and a hiss like steam being vented.

Lucca: I wonder what the noise is? Lucca: What was that?

As they approach the far end, a large dragon-shaped machine rumbles onto the bridge, follwed by the chancellor.

Chancellor: Go, Dragon Tank!
Take down the terrorists!

CHANCELLOR: Forward, Dragon Tank!
Crush those rebels!

Time for another boss battle! Luckily, Crono and Lucca already know its weakness. Attack the head and keep health up, and the tank breaks down in no time. Crono dramatically leaps onto its back and stabs his sword into it, setting off sparks and explosions.

Chancellor: Th, the Dragon Tank!!
FIT IT!!

CHANCELLOR: They got the Dragon Tank!!
Fix it!
Quickly!

The chancellor and two soldiers attempt to fix it, but it blows a hole in the bridge and leaves them precariously hanging onto each other across the gap.

Chancellor: Y, you bastards, you'll pay for this!

CHANCELLOR: Don't fool yourselves into
thinking you've gotten away with
this!

Of course, there are more soldiers up ahead, and they aren't too happy to see Crono.

"Jailbreak! They're escaping!
Lucca: Our only choice is to force our way through! Lucca: We have no choice but to
 break through!

They press through, and more soldiers join the chase, and as they're nearing the exit, the music stops....

"Stop! Stop!

Marle walks in from the direction of the throne room, wearing a fancy princessly dress.

Soldiers: Marledia-sama! SOLDIER: Princess Nadia!

Marle: I'm indebted to that person!
Make him welcome, as a guest!

Marle: This is my friend!
Show him your respect!

Soldier: B, but.... SOLDIER: B, but...
Marle: You won't obey what I say? Marle: Can't you take orders?
Soldier: No, that is surely not the case! SOLDIER: Of course!

If this seems familiar, it's very similar to the earlier scene when Marle acted as Queen Leene.

"That's as far as you're going! Hold it right there!

The chancellor walks in, and Courage and Pride starts up. It seems almost ironic....

Chancellor: Hey, bow down!
King Guardia XXXIII is on his way!

CHANCELLOR: Do as King Guardia XXXIII
says!

The king walks in.

Marle: Father.... Marle: Father...

King: Behave yourself, Marledia.
You are princess to the entire country
before you are an individual.

KING: Silence, Princess Nadia!
The throne comes before your
personal wishes!

Marle: You're wrong!
I'm my own girl before I'm a princess!

Marle: What!?
Just because I have a title doesn't
mean I'm not a person!

The NA version seems to miss the point of this exchange. The King asserts that her role as the princess takes precidence over her wants as an individual, and she counters that being herself matters more than being the princess.

King: You're suffering bad influences
from heading out of the castle!

KING: You pick up strange ideas
venturing outside!

Marle: It's not influence!
I decided it myself!

Marle: I didn't "pick up" anything!
It's called "common sense!"

King: Marledia! KING: Princess Nadia!

Marle: I'm sick of being here!
I'm leaving the castle!

Marle: I despise you!
I'm leaving!

She "magically" switches from the fancy dress to her street clothes.

Chancellor: Marledia-sama! CHANCELLOR: Princess Nadia!
Marle: Let's go, Crono!! Marle: Come on, Crono!!

She, Crono, and Lucca run out of the castle before anyone can react.

Chancellor: What are you doing!
After them! AFTER THEM!!

CHANCELLOR: Don't just stand there!
After them!

The music fades out. King Guardia looks downcast.

King: Marledia.... KING: Princess Nadia...

A.D.1000 Guardia Forest Guardia Forest

Since this is the only route away from the castle, it's where the chase resumes. Critical Moment plays.

Soldier: There they are!
Don't let them escape!!

SOLDIER: There they are!
Don't lose 'em!!

The soldiers run in after the party, forcing them down a side path.

Soldier: You can't run any more!! SOLDIER: There's no escape!
Soldier: Come along quietly! SOLDIER: Silence!

Crono's group runs down the path to a dead-end in a small clearing. There's a familiar bluish glowing something here....

Marle: A dead end!? Marle: Looks like a dead end!
Lucca: !! A Gate! Lucca: A Gate
Marle: Let's go! Marle: Come on!

Lucca: Let's go...?
We don't know which era we'll come out in!
Or even whether we can come back this time!

Lucca: But we don't know where
it will take us!

Marle: That's still fine!
Better than this era where Crono
was arrested because of me!

Marle: Who cares?!
This place stinks anyway!

In the original, Marle actually gives a meaningful reason.

Chancellor: Marledia-samaaa! CHANCELLOR: Princess Nadia!

The chancellor and a bunch of solders run in.

Lucca: Oh forget it, we'll make
it work somehow!

Lucca: This is completely irrational.
Marle: Let's go, Crono! Marle: Hurry, Crono!

So they open the gate and get in, and the music stops. The chancellor's jaw drops to the ground, not quite literally, when they disappear.

Chancellor: Th, they disappeared.... CHANCELLOR: They...disappeared!!
